It was mid afternoon at the Owode-Elede end of the Lagos Road, inward Ikorodu. Traffic inward Mile 12 crawled grudgingly and many motorists, soaked in sweat, laboured behind the wheels.Akinlabi, a middle-aged businessman, who resides at Agbede, a community in Agric area of Ikorodu, was going back home after picking up his car from his mechanic at Ajelogo, near Mile 12. All of a sudden, a fully loaded commercial danfo bus made an abrupt detour from the Mile 12-bound lane, leapt on Akinlabi’s own lane, faced oncoming traffic, and started speeding towards Mile 12 like a man on a date with the devil. The driver of the bus, which was loaded with passengers, blared the horn repeatedly, forcing motorists that had the right of way to quickly pull to the side of the road. And in a jiffy, many of the vehicles in the traffic had joined him, all facing oncoming traffic, honking at the same time and creating a major bedlam on the road. Within ten minutes, the lane had become congested and both lanes came to a standstill.

Muhammed came to power on July 29, 1975 after the overthrow of General Gowon’s government (Gowon was head of state for nine years). Unfortunately, he was president for only 199 days (from July 29, 1975 to February 13, 1976). As head of state, Muhammed lived in the house he owned as director of the Army Signal Corps. He didn’t use sirens or convoys and drove daily to his office at the Dodan Barracks, Lagos. He set up the Justice Akintola Aguda Panel to examine the desirability of relocating the federal capital from Lagos, which was crowded, to a more central location. Abuja was picked as the new location.
